"The After" - March 4-10/24

Tuesday, March 5

I am still trying to process what happened yesterday. My mom and M brought Humphrey as usual. Then they ate lunch, as I had already finished mine, and we watched a movie. We started out with comedies, but when Mom said she liked suspenseful movies as well, we started adding other genres. I had been watching the available oscar nominees on Netflix, and they have a powerful short film called The After. It is intense, but I was excited to share it with them. Mistake. My mom said she did not want to watch a movie like that, and M felt manipulated. He scolded me like it was obvious I should not have shown them that movie.

The other thing M said was that he usually gets a choice when a movie is violent like that. He was angry he did not get that choice. I told them it was hard because the movie is not very violent. They both immediately contradicted me. I had intentionally not told them anything about the movie because part of the point of it was to be surprised. I hope anyone who's reading this and has Netflix would look the movie up and see what you think. It's only 18 minutes. I've only ruined it a little bit, I hope.

Wednesday, March 6th

I usually enjoy an early morning shower, but what I am learning is that it needs to be very early before the other floors start their showers. I like the water to be almost too hot at the start so that at the end, as the water cools down, it is still warm. This morning, the water temperature varied every 5 seconds. Not fun! I got clean, but it was much cooler then I would have liked.

I found out today that my neurologist has moved to Colorado. So I won't be getting the MS-modifing drug I should be getting on Monday. I liked going to the hospital I did to get the infusion, so I need to be referred there so I can get a new neurologist. That is not a bad thing, but it does mean I need to wait to reschedule everything. Poop!

Thursday, March 7th

I was watching The Brothers Sun on Netflix, noticing the glaring difference between the two sons. One is Chinese, and the other is Japanese. There is a long tradition of getting Asians wrong on film. It's too bad it is still acceptable, apparently. Oh well, at least this white lady is here to point out the problem.

Friday, March 8th

The head nurse, whom I had been wanting to talk to, answered my call button this morning. I told her about needing the referral for the new neurologist, some minor food preferences for the kitchen, and to see if someone could drop Humphrey off and pick him up later without having to stay with me the whole time he was here. He has been visiting me since last May and has never once jumped off the bed. There was even one time when they moved the bed into the dining room with him on it. He was fascinated but not scared. Anyway, I think there is a good case to be made that he is a very well-behaved cat.

Max just got The Revenant, and I was very excited as I have been wanting to see that movie. It only took 9 years! I mentioned this to Mom and wondered how long it would be till I could see Oppenheimer. That's available now, she said. Yeah, but it would cost $20. Heavy sigh.

Sunday, March 10th

Sunday is my other shower day. I was nervous about taking the shower early, but my fears were unfounded. There was plenty of hot water! I think the big difference is not as many people take showers on Sunday as opposed to a weekday.

I showed the short film to two other people and they both liked it. One person agreed with the assessment that it is a violent movie. I guess I have seen too much violence on film and have become a bit numb to it. I would say the movie is extremely violent for 10 seconds. Before and after that is not violent at all.

I hope I can keep up this way of reporting my week. It gives you an idea of what happened to me and provides a grab bag for my thoughts. It is ultimately much quicker to write and edit. See you next week!

I read all your postings ! Today has been anything but boring. I had to drive to Prescott to be with Dave who had a minor kidney procedure. I had an action packed morning, but still managed to go to a line dance class & get on the road 15 minutes early. I actually forgot that today was the anniversary of Ian’s death, until the texts started coming in from his friends. I am blessed to know so many kind people who remember.
