"Poor Things" - March 11-17/24

Wednesday, March 13th

I really was thinking of writing yesterday, but then it got late, and I fell asleep. Mom, M, and Humphrey visited as usual on Monday. I knew enough not to talk about last Monday, and I thought we could go back to watching silly comedies. The Oscars were on Sunday, and Mom was curious to watch the movie for which Emma Stone received her award. You can not rent "Poor Things" yet, so I ended up buying the movie. It was only $12, which seemed like a bargain since I guessed it would be $20. None of the three of us knew anything about the movie, which I tend to think is the best way to go into a movie. Mom enjoyed the sets and the costumes while she was bored with the movie, and M and I sat awkwardly through the explicit sex that comprises the bulk of the film. I am going to read some reviews, as I don't think any of us quite got the point.

I was also given a TB test on Monday, as it had been about a year and a half since my last test. Interestingly, this hospital was originally built to deal with TB way back when. It is still the place where you would go if you tested positive for TB on Oahu. When they were reading my results of the test on Wednesday, it was a little ambiguous as five different people gave their opinion before they decided I was negative.

Thursday, March 14th

I got up in my chair today. I'm supposed to do that every Thursday, as I have my therapist appointment. This is so I can go to another room and have some privacy. We Zoomed with Mom and talked about MLR and her supplements. They are expensive, and I have been taking them on and off since 1996. Mom doesn't think they do anything because she cannot see a difference. As the person taking the supplements, I do feel a difference, and now I have a track record that I think shows that I do better taking them. I will talk to my new neurologist, and hopefully she can back me up on my opinion.

At 3:00 p.m., mom's Feldenkrais instructor came over to work on me. Feldenkrais is a method of exercise therapy developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli man, in the 1950s or so. It is a way of reorganizing the communication between the brain and the body that allows the body to heal from trauma or injury. It can work for me and even for cerebral palsy patients to unfreeze joints that have become hardened in one position. That has been happening in my left hand, which is doubly frustrating as that is my one usable limb. I'm very happy that we can counter the degeneration of my independence.

Friday, March 15th

The hospital called today and they had a cancellation, so I will meet with my new neurologist next Friday, the 22nd, at 10:30 a.m. The original appointment was late April, and I am very glad I don't have to wait until then. I let everyone know when the appointment is. How nice it was at a good time!

Saturday, March 16th

My sister visits almost every weekend, unless she is out of town or has a super big deadline she needs to meet. She used to bring me Thai food, but now I prefer that she call me so I can choose what she should bring me from the prepared food section of Whole Foods. What? You shop at Whole Paycheck? But just like every grocery store, Whole Foods has its hidden gems. One of these is the $15 plate of food from the prepared food section. You get one main dish and two side dishes. My sister has been getting food for me there for the last couple of months.

My sister got me an iPhone 13, which she brought me and set up when she came on Saturday. I have been an Android user since I got my first smartphone. Now I have to get used to Apple. FaceTime is worth it to see Humphrey easily when I call Mom.

Sunday, March 17th

Mom stopped by after church to work on my left hand and feed me lunch. She is doing the exercises from the Feldenkrais instructor last Thursday. It's very relaxing, and my hand opens up nicely, but the effects do not last. I'm sure doing it consistently over time will make a difference.

Have a great week!
