"Blades of Glory" - March 25-31/24

Monday, March 25th

I wanted to watch a really good Will Ferrell movie, so we watched Blades of Glory. Very, very funny. Humphrey was snuggling next to me and he was so cute everyone wanted to pet him. This would bring him out of his supremely contented state and he would put his head up and then stand up to get the full affect of the petting. Then he would settle back down against me and relax. I almost wanted to tell people to leave him alone when we are together. He does love getting attention so I will never stop that from happening.

Tuesday, March 26th

I was struck buy a great idea, or really a great title, for my next essay. I wrote the first three paragraphs on Monday and three or four more this morning before the lady who massages me got here. She is also someone who I bounce ideas off of and who helps me shape my essays. I read her what I had so far and she liked it and helped me figure out where to go with it. When I get going, it comes out quick and gets done fast.

Wednesday, March 27th
I had told the staff to put me on the list for a haircut and the lady was here this morning. They got me up in my chair and I went down to the first floor. The staff guy, who is very handy with mechanical things, helped figure out how to take off my headrest. That made giving me a haircut much easier. I had been using the hairdresser mom and my sister use but he is pricey, so I thought I would try the hospitals stylist at 1/3 the price. One of the things that I inherited from my father is his male pattern baldness. What fun, she says very sarcastically. That really makes you not care about who cuts your hair. If anyone has a suggestion about how to hide my vast expanse of forehead, please let me know. The haircut turned out completely acceptable! Yippee!

It was particularly good timing because today is my shower day. I went downstairs and got my 15 minute haircut, and came upstairs and took a shower! No annoying stray hairs! The water got cool for a while but it was warm for the important parts.

Thursday, March 28th

The most interesting thing that happened today was during the weekly visit by the Feldenkrais instructor. (Mom comes for the session also.) She taught me the nuances when I am doing the exercises myself. A lot of it was me trying not so hard. When I press it's not a hard pressure, it's soft just at the tip of my finger. I thought it was interesting how much I had to concentrate on being gentle and do not just press down as hard as I could. That's a life lesson, I think.

Friday, March 29th

I texted an old friend of mine who used to critique my writing. I just needed the final paragraph to finish the essay. I thought she could help me with that. And then I thought, come on, Ellen, put your big boy pants on and finish the damn thing yourself! I read it a few times and made some polishes and then I spit out the last paragraph. It was really good. I am amazed at how fast the words pour out of me when I know what to write.

Saturday, March 30th

My sister didn't come today because she was going to go to Mom's for Easter dinner. Unfortunately, I didn't think about it and had too much sugar on Friday and I spent all of Friday night in pain. I told the nurse in the morning and she changed my urine bag so they could get a clean sample to test. Luckily, because it was Saturday, they could call the doctor and get my antibiotics started.

I called my sister and my mom to give them the bad news. I really didn't want to sit up in my chair for hours with a brand new UTI. I thought Mom would be really bummed, but I guess it is an indication of how often I get sick that she was not surprised. She and my sister would come to me tomorrow night. I was kind of glad I didn't have to get up and take the taxi over there.

Sunday, March 31st

Mom went to early service at church because she woke up on her own in time. This meant she got out of church early so she called me about 8:00 a.m. to see if I was ready for her to feed me breakfast. It was a treat to see Mom early. I was supposed to go to Mom's for Easter dinner, but yesterday morning I discovered I had a UTI and I didn't want to sit up in my chair and make it worse. My sister ended up bringing dinner to me. She had to get up early tomorrow morning so we finished quickly and she was gone by 7:00 p.m. It was a mellow Easter, but very nice. I hope everyone reading this had a great day!
