"The Manchurian Candidate" (1962) - May 6-11/24

Monday, May 6th

I suggested a movie that mom just watched on Netflix, inside job. Darn it! I've got to tell her that if it is on Netflix and you want to watch it, think about suggesting it for our Monday viewing. Don't just watch it yourself and enjoy it. What was she thinking! She mentioned this classic and I really liked the idea of that movie. Definitely watch the original version with Angela Lansbury. Somehow, even though she is younger than in "Murder She Wrote,"  she looks the same. She is the epitome an overbearing mother and steals the movie.

Tuesday, May 7th

J and her husband are house-sitting on the Big Island for six weeks, so I was all alone today. I did three or four puzzles on the puzzle game I know very very well, but I am now playing on a new device. I need to get used to how it feels to move the pieces around. I was working on 64-piece puzzles and at the end, I spent some time working on the 256-piece puzzle I had started. On the iPad Pro, there is a satisfying click when the pieces snap together.

I had been thinking about that plucky little cockroach. I cracked myself up thinking about how he had traveled all the way to the top of my bed and come upon this seemingly huge bounty all for himself. I'm sure I will get swatted away once I try to eat this huge, delicious-looking creature. He takes a little nip and, surprise, surprise! Nothing happens! Oh, well, if no one is going to stop me, then I will try harder and harder to take a big bite out of the tender flesh I have found. Alas, the huge, delicious-looking creature has friends and they are not fans of small, defenseless cockroaches. Sorry, not sorry.

Wednesday, May 8th

I had an early-ish shower with two people, which is nice because things can go faster. As they were waiting for the water to heat up, I said they should just start the shower with the warm water and do it as fast as they could before it ran out. On Sunday, my shower water verged on being too hot. I did not complain for fear that it would cool down. I thought of that shower as I took my quick, lukewarm shower today.

Mom came by in the afternoon to do some arm exercises with me. She really is committed to keeping my arm and hand moving. I will ask A about how mom can loosen my right arm, as that resists bending at the elbow.

Thursday, May 9th

We had another good session with A and she worked more with mom and me. I know I cannot expect mom to be anywhere near the level A is, but I do want her to be very intentional with her movements. I think mom and I both hear what A says as good advice for the other person. We know what to do but are you listening? That sounds like a good recipe for both of us to resist learning what she is trying to teach us while looking like we are taking it in. Good job. I really need to shove the patience cap way down on my head so I can be calm and communicate clearly. A will be visiting Germany for a couple of months. I eagerly await her return.

Friday, May 10th

I have been playing the same jigsaw puzzle game on my last two phones and my old tablet without feeling the need to purchase anything. Lordy, I can be cheap when I want to be. I finally broke down and spent the six dollars it cost to buy the premium version of the game so I would not have ads. The iPad Pro is like a billboard in front of me and the only way to get rid of the ad was to tap the teensy-weeny x in the far upper right corner. Very difficult to do. Now I never will again. And I will probably get some different puzzles. Win-win!

Saturday, May 11th

My sister got together with my mom as it was the day before her birthday. She said she wanted to take mom out to brunch, but she ended up eating breakfast with her and working the rest of the day. She got a lot done. I missed her. Ah, well… I will see her next week.

I didn't get much sleep last night. I take melatonin after I get tucked in, and it does a good job putting me to sleep unless I push through and stay awake. Then all the nice going to sleep effects wear off, and I am left awake and many times not able to go back to sleep. That's what happened last night. Luckily, the night after I stay awake all night, I sleep soundly. I will go to mom's well-rested tomorrow.

Sunday, May 12th

Yay! I finally get to give mom the photo book I made for her. But first, a shower. As it is Mother's Day, the hospital has a breakfast at 9:30 AM for the families to have a nice meal together. As I am going to mom's for dinner, I do not need to partake. My CNA and all the CNA's on the floor have to work hard to get everyone up, as most people's families will visit. I thought, great, no one else will be using the water, so I will have a warm shower. Nope. The water went warm, then cold, then warm again, and then cold again. It makes turning the water off almost feel warm. Almost.

The taxi driver who picked me up sounded familiar. He is G and he has driven me many times and he's very nice. I wore my glasses, which I don't always do and when I looked at him, I said, I didn't realize that's what you looked like! We all laughed. My sister came down and picked me up and scolded me for not waiting for her, as she had an umbrella to shade me from the sun. I was busy trying to get into the building with the nice air conditioning.

The meal was wonderful! Mom made a rack of pork that she got from Costco. They only have that available during Christmas and now Easter. Very yummy. She also made homemade applesauce with chunky apples, peas and potatoes. My sister made an angel food cake for dessert with fresh strawberries. Mom didn't know she was bringing that over so that was a nice surprise.

My nice surprise was that mom allowed the three of us to eat in her bedroom, which she normally never does. Humphrey had taken his time coming out from under the bed and had only recently settled down near me. Mom felt bad ushering us all into the dining room away from Humphrey so she let us stay! I got to sit next to him the entire time! Sweet! Of course, mom was thrilled with the book, as she's not great dealing with digital photographs.

I am committed to posting more Humphrey‘s Mews and more Tips and Tricks now that I have the monthly essays and Weekly blogs in a good routine. Of course, I'm not sure what I'm going to do for next month‘s essay, but I will come up with something. Or maybe I will take a month off. We'll see!

Have a great week!
